3 Reasons Why You Should Write the Optional SAT/ACT Essay

It makes sense to see the word “optional” and immediately decide it’s not something you’re interested in. This is especially true when it comes to the SAT and ACT, which both offer optional essay sections that do not affect your composite score. So, why would they offer something that you aren’t being graded on? There are a few reasons why this optional writing section might work out in your favor.

You’re Looking to Get into a Writing Program

If you are hoping to get into an exclusive program that focuses heavily on writing, it will only do you good to opt in for the essay.  Showing off a high essay score will be one more thing to show the admissions board to prove you’d be an excellent student at their university. If you are hoping to major in journalism, English, history or communications, this would be a great way to show how prepared you are for the program.

Something Extra for College Apps
Even if you aren’t interested in majoring in a writing-heavy field, it can still be an impressive addition to your application if you score well. It shows that you’re willing to go the extra mile when it comes to academics, even if it’s optional. Additionally, it can be a great thing to include if you find yourself falling short in other areas, whether it be your other test scores, your grades in a certain class or few extracurricular activities. This optional essay just might be your saving grace!

Certain Schools Will Require It

While most don’t, there are some colleges out there that will want to see your essay score in order to be considered for acceptance. Make sure you know if any of the colleges you’re applying to are going to need that essay score or not before opting out, as you may come to regret it later if it turns out to be a requirement! If you go ahead and take it anyway, you’ll have all your bases covered when it comes time to fill out those applications.
