How To Choose A Topic For Your Personal Statement

Writing about yourself is hard. It’s still hard for us. But the personal statement is the single most important qualitative piece of your application, and its importance has skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the absence of test scores or consistent GPAs, the way you express yourself in the meager 650 words you’re allotted matters more than ever before.

The Common App’s personal statement prompts are broad enough that you could write on nearly any subject successfully, if you do it well. Students admitted to top tier, highly selective universities have written about things as mundane as riding the public bus or the ritual of setting their alarm clocks.

That’s to say: you can write an excellent college essay, no matter your background or experience.

When your choices are infinite, though, it can be hard to determine one just-right topic.

We recommend you start with a list. Get a pen and paper and write out all of your activities and involvements. Captain of the field hockey team? Volunteer at the animal shelter? Yearbook section editor? Include it.

Next, write down a list of things that interest you. Was there one particularly intriguing passage in a novel that’s stuck with you? A specific history lecture, math problem, or science lab? List it.

Do you have any hobbies? Write those out as well.

At the end of about 10 minutes of brainstorming, you’ll have a list of the primary ways you spend your time, and occupy your mind. Read it over again.

Finally, choose an activity or experience you’re particularly drawn to, and just start writing. It’s okay if you decide later that it’s not the right topic. The most important, and often most difficult part of the personal statement process is developing the courage and drive to begin.
